Asphalt Shingles: What You Need to Know

Asphalt shingles are one of the most popular roofing materials for homes — and for good reason.
They’re durable, affordable, and come in a wide variety of styles and colors. But not all asphalt shingles are the same.
Here’s a simple breakdown to help you understand the different types:

Three-Tab Shingles

Three-tab shingles are the most basic and traditional style. They’re named for the way each shingle is cut into three even "tabs," giving the roof a flat, uniform look.

Pros:

  • Lightweight, affordable, and easy to install.

Cons:

  • They have a shorter lifespan (around 20–25 years) and are more vulnerable to wind and weather damage compared to other types.

Architectural Shingles

Architectural shingles, also known as laminated shingles, are a step up in both quality and appearance. They’re made by layering multiple pieces of asphalt together, giving them a thicker, more dimensional look that can mimic wood shakes or slate tiles.

Pros:

  • Longer lifespan (up to 30 years or more), better durability, and a more stylish, high-end appearance.

Cons:

  • They cost more upfront than three-tab shingles, but they offer better value over time.

Organic Shingles

Organic shingles were once a popular option, made with a base of recycled felt paper soaked in asphalt. They are heavier and more flexible than fiberglass shingles but are mostly outdated now because they are more prone to moisture damage and don’t last as long.

Pros:

  • They were affordable and flexible.

Cons:

  • More susceptible to water damage, heavier, and largely replaced by more advanced fiberglass shingles today.
